Monsanto and the Milpa
Monsanto and the Milpa, Field, First Food Residency, Taller Espacio Alternativo, Oaxaca, Mexico, 2014
A performance piece exploring the mythology and permacultural approach to farming corn, which is threatened by the corporation Monsanto who use genetic modification in order to enslave the natural farming systems of Mexico. Milpa refers to the four main ingredients of Mexican cookery: corn, beans, chilli, tomatoes - all of which grow together, the beans grow up the stems of the corn etc. This way of growing and cooking comes from the Aztecs who domesticated the corn from grass. It means a lot of things to a lot of people and is really threatened by Monsanto.
